Cordyceps mushroom is a unique mushroom that is known for its various nutraceutical and therapeutic potential. Everything about cordyceps mushroom sets it apart from its fellow medicinal fungi by the way it grows to its unmatchable health benefits concerning humans.
Cordyceps is the composite of a genus of fungus that grows on the larva of insects. Cordyceps, locally known as Yarsa gumba in Nepal, Winter grass / Caterpillar fungus in English. There are numerous species of Cordyceps, among them Cordyceps militaris & Cordyceps sinensis are popular.
Initially, local herders observed that yak, goat, sheep, etc. consuming Cordyceps while grazing in the forest became very strong and stout. This observation paved the way for the discovery of its medicinal value. Then people consumed it and became convinced of its medicinal effects in enhancing vigour and vitality.
C.militaris is a potential harbour of biometabolites for herbal drugs and evidence is available about its applications for the revitalization of various systems of the body. C. militaris is boosting up the present herbal treatments, as well as gearing up the green pharmacy revolution, to create a friendly environment with reasonable safety. Traditionally cordyceps is used to support enhanced oxygen utilization & blood flow, especially to the liver & non-exercising skeleton muscle, stamina & energy levels (At the cellular level), lung health, sexual health, muscle recovery, manage blood sugar level & kidney health. Cordyceps may allow athletes to maintain a higher intensity of exercise, while the reduction of oxidative stress from high-intensity exercise may delay fatigue.
Several active compounds work together to influence numerous systems and processes throughout the body.
Polysaccharides, including beta-glucans, are found both inside and outside the cells of cordyceps and makeup 3% to 8% of the mushroom’s weight. These complex carbohydrate chains are strings of smaller carbohydrate molecules; in cordyceps, these include the monosaccharides mannose, glucose and galactose. Numerous polysaccharides have been extracted from these mushrooms and tested for their specific benefits.
Nucleoside analogues are a unique component of cordyceps. These molecules contain a nucleic acid analog, sugar and a phosphate group made up of one to three phosphates. Why is this important? True nucleosides are found in DNA and RNA. The analogs in cordyceps have a different structure but function similarly, which can affect processes involving DNA replication.
Beta-Glucan
The most notable nucleoside analog in cordyceps is called cordycepin, or 3- deoxyadenosine, the highest concentrations of which are found in C. militaris fruiting bodies.
Other notable cordyceps mushroom compounds include:
Lipids (fats), including unsaturated fatty acids and sterols
Amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, including ring-shaped chains known as cyclic peptides and pairs of amino acids called polyamines
Antioxidants like carotenoids and superoxide dismutase (SOD)
Cordycepic acid, or d-mannitol
From a nutritional standpoint, cordyceps is a source of a range of vitamins and minerals, which is pretty common among both medicinal and culinary mushrooms!
Cordyceps is boosting up the present herbal treatments, as well as gearing up the green pharmacy revolution. Cordycepin is known for various nutraceutical and therapeutic potential, such as anti-diabetic, anti-hyperlipidemia, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antioxidant, anti-ageing, anticancer, antiviral, hepato-protective, hypo-sexuality, cardiovascular diseases, antimalarial, anti-osteoporotic, anti-arthritic, cosmeceutical etc. which makes it a most valuable medicinal mushroom for helping in maintaining good health.

Cordyceps’ active compounds have been studied both in isolation and as a complete package, usually in animal (in vivo) or cell (in vitro) studies. The results don’t necessarily mean that cordyceps has the same effects in humans, but these studies do provide insight into how the mushroom’s active compounds interact with the body.
By examining the way the active compounds behave in lab environments, scientists get an idea of the potential reasons why cordyceps has been prized as a medicine—and how the mushroom could best be used to address illness in humans.
In human studies, the benefits of cordyceps mushrooms have been tested at doses of 1 to 3 grams of dried Cordyceps per day.
Some recommendations suggest taking cordyceps supplements only one or two times per week to enjoy the benefits of immunity and overall health. However, the best results for both energy and specific health effects may be achieved by taking the mushroom every day.
Cordyceps Hot Tea
